The Last Post

This year Mrs Roil has been my teacher and I have learnt lots of things from her. At the start of the year I was given 2 badges a sports pal and a young leader badge. I have had lots of sporting opportunities and I have played in T-Ball and some inter school competitions.

We have written and learnt about animals that no one has seen before and we have been camping and much more. When we went to Camp Kaitawa we got pushed to our limits. At Camp Kaitawa we learnt more about the world then we knew.

The Hair Dryer and the ping pong

Today we did an experiment with a hair dryer, three ping pong balls and power.

Step 1: Get one of the ping pong balls and put it on top of the hair dryer then turn the hair dryer on.

Step 2: Observe and hold the hair dryer steady.

Step 3: If you master the experiment then try putting two balls on the hair dryer and try to balance them.

This experiment worked because the force from the hair dryer was pushing the ball up and meeting the force from the gravity and keeping the ball in the between both forces.
Another reason why is because the forces are meeting and the hair dryer force is also going around the ball keeping it in line.

Reflection

Science
What I have learnt about science is how gravity works and all of the experiments we have done.
What has improved I have improved my knowledge about science.
I am proud of completing all of the tasks that we learnt.
What did I enjoy I enjoyed doing all of the experiments like the egg drop and the gravity test.

Art
What I have learnt about art is new painting skills and techniques. I have also learnt how to paint properly.
What has improved I have improved my skill of painting and art.
I am proud of My piece of art that we did with Mrs Morton.
What did I enjoy about art I enjoyed learning the art skills with Mrs Morton.

Maths
What I have learnt about maths is all of our new math strategies
What has improved I have improved my maths skills
I am proud of all of my test results.

What did I enjoy I enjoyed doing all of the mathletics posters.

Science Hot air and cold air.

What happens when air meets hot or cold water?
The first paragraph will be about what I think will happen, then about immersing it in the water. Then observing  the experiment . After the particles will start to expand and that's what happens in the experiment.

The first thing to do is get all of the equipment for the experiment  you will need: one bucket full of cold water and one bucket of hot water also one fizzy bottle and one balloon. If needed the experiment can be done with one.
Step 1: First full one of the buckets up with hot water then full the other one up with water. After doing that put a balloon on each of the bottles.
Step 2: Next put the one of the bottles in the hot water and another in the cold water.
Step 3: The next step is to observe the science experiment and watch the balloon blow up or shrink up.

When  putting the bottle in the hot or cold water make sure that the whole bottle is immersed so the balloon starts to blow when it is in the hot water. After putting the bottle in the hot water and finished observing it put the bottle in the cold water and watch the balloon change.

The air is made from lots of little particles and expand when they are heated. The heat from the hot water make the particles warm up and expand. When they expand the bottle gets too small for the particles to expand even more that's why the  balloon stretches. When the balloon stretches all of the warm air goes into the balloon and causes it to blow up.

The answer to the question is when you put the bottle in the cold water the air gets cold and starts to freeze and after the cold water put the bottle in the hot water and watch the particles start to move back around and blow up the balloon.

Our class has been doing some science experiments and then writing a story about the this story tells you how to do our experiments that we have recently done. It also

These are pictures of what happened

Write an explanation that explains clearly to the reader

include title and intro that states your topic and maybe asks a question

include a summary statement that links with the intro

Write the body of the text in order using some of the key words - Suggest the sequence of the experiment  clearly - firstly, after that finally.

Include some topic-specific science vocab

Show how the process happens by using continuous present tense?  This will mean using lots of ‘is’ and ‘are’

Egg drop

On Tuesday our class did a egg drop. An egg drop is when you have a glass that is fulled with water, a plastic plate, an empty toilet roll and one egg.

The experiment worked because the gravity pushed the egg down into the water. The force of the gravity pushed the egg down because eggs are something that you can physically touch. The egg went into the cup because the plate and toilet roll was removed fast enough to leave the egg behind and not take it with the toilet roll and plate.

Sailing Story

One day there was this guy. His name was Bostan . Bostan was the best sailor and loved sailing. One day Bostan was sailing and he was sitting on the starboard side. He was on an optimist yacht and wanted to be a sailor racing in the Americas cup.

He had researched all about optimist yachts and is researching about catamarans.
As a kid all of his posters all over the walls was yachts,  yachts and more yachts. Traveling around the world sailing was his dream until the catastrophe.

The catastrophe destroyed his career and nearly his life.  When Bostan was about 20 years old he was in a head on collision.  The car that he crashed into was not a car it was truck. The truck hit him so hard that Bostan flying out of his seat and ripped his seat belt out.  The truck driver range 111 and the out of the distance came an ambulance.

A couple of days later Bostan got out of hospital but he came out of hospital diferent. He came out with a bad memory left in his mind and he was left in a wheelchair.  That’s how his career turned now he just has to watch.

Stockcar Racing

Stockcars

-1.How many years have you been racing stock cars? Crystal
-2.How many stockcars have you owned? Charlotte
-3.Do you name your stockcars?John
-4.Where in the world would you like to race your Stock Car? Daniel
-5.Would you like your stockcar racing to become a career? Georgia

Stockcar racing is a car destroying sport. It has destroyed many cars and Racetracks.  I have been racing cars for a few years.  I have owned more that my dad and have one name for all of my cars.  I have also raced all over the North Island.

Stockcar racing is a hobby I have been doing since I was six.  I had watch my Dad and Uncle create the sport. Now it has turned into a hobby for our family.  We have stockcars, street stocks and saloons.  Ever since I was six I have had more cars and more broken parts than my dad and brother. Over all I have had five stockcars and one of the I am racing now and the other four have totaled and aren’t strong enough to race.  I have had two streetstocks and three saloons.

I have got a nickname it is Maddog.  It is Maddog because when I was little and started racing I had a name that my Mum chose then when I got a game on our playstation there was a name that I really liked. The name was Maddog.  Ever since we had that game it has been my name.

My family and I have been traveling to meetings all over the North Island and we have had one trip down south.  We traveled to Nelson and all of us want to go for one more trip to the South Island.  The next big trip that our family wants to go on is to Christchurch.

In response to your question about stockcar racing becoming my career, I would like for it to become my career.  Sadly, racing RC stockcars does not earn you money.  Due to this, stockcars wouldn't make a good career but would make a fabulous hobby.

Maths Tests Scores

For the past five days our class has been doing maths basic facts tests. This is a pie graph it has all by results put in to percentages. I don't think a pie graph is the best graph for a score because it shows the percentage not the actual score.

This is a bar graph I think that this is the better way to graph your scores because it show the actual score and not the percentage like a pie chart.

Why You Should Go To Alaska

I think you should go to Alaska instead of New Zealand because they have more wildlife. They have things that New Zealand doesn’t and there are more places to travel. Alaska more wildlife, magnificent scenery and is much bigger.

In Alaska there is an abundance of wildlife.  There are Black Bears, Brown Bears and Polar Bears.  They also have Bald Eagles. The Bald Eagle is a bird. It is prey found in North America.  Willow Ptarmigan and many more. Alaska has over 430 species of animals. It is also known as the Willow Grouse. There are Deer, Moose and Caribou are also common in Alaska.A deer is like a reindeer but with big antlers. A moose is the same but with even bigger antlers. Alaska has Bats, Beavers, Bisons and Coyotes. You can see these animals at zoos and wildlife parks.

Alaska has activities and scenery that New Zealand doesn’t. They have the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are colorful waves in the sky. They can be red, purple and green . The northern lights come to Alaska every Sled dog racing is an alaskan sport. They race in sleds and get pulled by a pack of 16 dogs. There is a water park called H20asis it is the biggest water park in the U.S.A.  It has a 505 ft water slide and much more.   It is in Anchorage, Alaska. The H20asis has a 575 ft lazy river as well. If you like Pizza then  Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria in Anchorage.

Alaska is 1,717,854 km² that is about seven to six times the size of New Zealand. Alaska has over 148 towns and cities. In Alaska there was a population of 621,400 in 1998. In some towns and cities people called Inuits. Inuits live in igloos. Igloos are domes made from ice and snow.  Alaska is so big that it is bigger than France,  Italy,  Spain and England combined. If you go to Anchorage you can go to the zoo. There is also a museum in Anchorage. Anchorage has a population of 298,610 and  it covers 1,704.7 km² of Alaskas 1,717,854 km².

I hope this has made you decide where you are going this holidays. If you go to Alaska you have 148 places to travel and heaps of sightseeing places. If you are taking kids than it is also the place to go there are Zoos and museums. Alaska has all different species from feathery to furry.

My Holiday

Under 16 Stockcars
“Welcome to the New Zealand  Under 16 stockcar champs. Lets get this underway.” The first race starts in 5 minutes and I'm in it. I start getting my car ready. 5 minutes later my group goes to the track and starts to grid up. everyone is all pumped up and ready to race.3,2,1 GO!!. We  take off and go into the first corner and there is a big pile up. I'm stuck in the middle of it and there are cars all around me. The leader comes back round and all of the cars start to drive  away. I chase the leader a take him out in the next corner.
“ Damn I missed” I say.
I watch the leader of the race come back around and wait for the right moment to thrust my car into his car. I Start moving getting faster and faster he comes past and I take off slamming the trigger. The race leader goes into the corner. I Line him up and smash him into the wall. He rolls over and I was well timed I drive out from underneath his car start racing normally. The race finishes and I check what I came.

The Windmill Farmer

The Windmill Farmer

I'm a lonely old windmill farmer and it is planting season again. Every autumn it is planting time. I like my farm to bits and take very good care of it. Farming windmills is my hobby and I go out and give them water I like farming because i don’t have to do much and they just need water. When it is planting time I get really excited and make sure my all of my tools are in good nick. If my tools aren't going to last planting season I would go to the shops and get new ones.

The next day I grab my hoe and start to plant. When the Windmills start to grow  I check them every day. Every night I watch the weather forecast. If a storm is coming I make sure the windmills will hold up. If they won’t I have to make them stronger.

Last season it all went wrong and I was devastated because all of windmills got blown down all because of a big storm. At the break of dawn I get up and get ready for another day of work. Every day I work hard and leave my house and go into the country air. At the end of every day I go inside make me a cup of tea. I walk to my seat and watch the sun go down. By the time the sun goes down it is watering time. Every 2 to 3 hours I water them. One of the downsides of being a farmer is having to dig them up and wait for next autumn.

It has just been past Autumn and I am going through a hard and cold winter. The windmills had gone now and I am all lonely again the windmills are like family to me and I talk to them every day. I hate the winter because it kills my windmills and makes me lonely again. I am halfway through winter and All of my water pipes are frozen up. There used to be grass but now its just snow, snow and more snow. Layers of snow stop me from even leaving my house.

At the end of winter the snow starts to clear up and leave my house. I brush off the last little bit of snow and look in front of me. I see nothing but windmills
“oh wait windmills yes yes yes my windmills are back they must of replanted themselves when they got killed by the cold and freezing Winter. I was so happy  and excited. I was Jumping with glee.

I have gotten a link from the literacy shed.

The Catch

I throw my line into the water. I wait a few minutes my line gets tugged and I bring it in. Its only a small one and I am very disappointed. I hear the sound of a fox screaming. I go through the bush and see a fox tangled up in rope. I cut the rope off its leg and it backs away. It looked like the fox had frozen. Then out of nowhere the fox jumps onto my chest and knocked me over. The fox runs to my one and only fish. He grabs it and starts running away. I start to chase the fox.

It goes through the thorns. Should I go through or not?  I decided to go through. The fox runs up the hill. We reach the summit and the dog throws the fish away into the fog. The fog evaporates and a big giant lake appears I am surprised but disappointed. The fox has thrown my only fish into the water.

Splash!  A giant fish jumps out of the water. When it got back in the water the fox drags a branch over to me.   I tie some string to it and throw the line into the water. I get a bite and pull it in. It feels bigger than the first one that I caught. I pull it in and its about a meter long. I throw my line back into the water and wait for a little 10 minutes later I get a giant tug I pick my rod up and the fish goes away.
“Damn it” I say to myself

I pull my line in anyway and check the hook. I throw it back out and wait five minutes. I get a tug and pull as hard as I can. A fish come up on shore. I take the hook out and put it on my shoulder. The fox and I start to walk back to the village. We get to the entrance and give the fox the smaller one. I walk into the village. I turned around and the fox was gone. When I got into the village the villagers looked so happy. I was proud and happy. From that day on I went to that lake to fish for my villagers.

This is my writing about a little boy and a fox that has to catch fish for his village and the fox take his fish and takes him to a lake where there is lots of fish.

Here is a link to the web site we got the story from. It is a video called the catch.

Camp Reflection

Camp Kaitawa

My favorite time at camp was going rock climbing beside Lake Kiriopukae. Right next to the lake was a natural rock that had plants and it was something that we could climb up. We went to the lake because is was right next to Michael Noonan's grave. Michael Noonan was a armed constabulary dispatcher from Onepoto to Wairoa.

Research
Rock climbing was started in the 1880’s and was invented in Wales, Britain.
Rock climbing is when you climb up a natural rock face and reach the top or the summit of it. The record height of rock climbing in 24 hours is 29,130ft  it is 1370ft. The fastest time in speed climbing is someone climbed up a 15 meter wall in 6.26 seconds. When you are rock climbing you only use hands, feet and gear like rope and harnesses. In the sport the most common injury is when you get sore fingers from the rock and climbing a far distance.

What, When, Who, Where and Why
I choose climbing up the rock because it was really fun and enjoyable.
On Monday the 27th of May Rm 17 went  to Camp Kaitawa. When we got there Miss Hill and Mrs Roil took us to see Michael Noonan. He is buried next to Lake Kiriopukae
Next to the lake is a big giant rock and that is what we climbed up.

Next time
I would like to try climb up the other side of the Giant rock

When we went to Lake Kiriopukae it was all dried up and was in two big ponds and had a little creek going around to the other half.

This is my Reflection about camp. We had to choose a favorite part of camp and I choose going to lake kiriopukae

Broken Arm

Yesterday we got into our camp groups and we bandaged up one of our team mates. I was the one that got bandaged up we used glad wrap. We use glad wrap because if you get a broken arm you can just check the arm and when you take it off it wont peel of your skin if you get a burn. We also used glad wrap because it will keep out the bugs.

John Roil

Yesterday John Roil came into our class and told us how to survive in the bush.He also told us how to prepare for a tramp and stay safe. He has been in the army.

Rules
Before you leave to go on a hike, go camping or hunting it is better to tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. Always take a first aid kit.
Before you leave check the weather and the cloths you are taking. Good broken in shoes are also a good idea so they prevent blisters from turning up.

Equipment
When you  are getting your pack ready check through all of you gear and make sure it is in good condition. make sure you have packed water and food as well. Take things like a water bottle, warm thermals and other warm clothes and pants. when you pack your things it is a good idea to pack them inside resealable bags.

When you think you are ready to go but you don’t exactly know where you are  going and you get los don follow a river, creek or a stream do the STAR drill S=stop, T=think, A=asses R=respond. also in the bush there are a couple of poisonous plants such as Stinging nettle and bushmans lawer.

Training
When you have new shoes for tramping it is good if you break them in and train hard. When you go camp you will see why you needed to train hard and break in your shoes. If you go camp or tramping and you don’t train you will not know your limits.

So before you leave remember to tell someone where you are going and when you will be coming back.
